Create A Plan To Remodel Your Kitchen

By Benjamin Rowe

Kitchen remodeling is a home improvement project most people look forward to. A new kitchen increases the value of your home and makes your life easier. The first step to your new kitchen is to set a budget. How much money can you invest in the project? This will help drive your other decisions. It's always a good idea to leave a margin for unexpected expenses.

As you are making a budget, you really need to determine how long you will stay in your home. If you think you will sell within a year or so, your budget should be lower. Determine what features are needed. You can save on other materials such as flooring, cabinet doors and counter tops. What is the latest kitchen trend? Before you start planning your remodeling project, do some research on the current trends and designs being used in kitchens. Magazines and the internet can be your friends. Visit your local home improvement center for more ideas. Create a file of styles and colors you love. This is going to come handy when it is time to purchase items. Options in Kitchen Remodeling Cabinets are usually one of the priciest items in a kitchen remodeling project. Believe it or not, they account for half the budget, most times. If you can't buy new cabinets, you can still use some alternatives. A much cheaper alternative is to reface the cabinets. In refacing, the doors are replaced and exterior wood areas are covered. This is not as expensive. Another option is to paint your cabinets and to replace hardware. If you want new cabinets, other features should be considered as well. You can install tilt out drawers, pull out garbage cans, and even a Lazy Susan. You can choose doors in solid wood, clear glass or stained glass. It's a good idea to shop around before you buy anything.

You can even save on flooring and countertops. Substitute vinyl flooring in place of more expensive ceramic tile to save money. If you can install ceramic tiles yourself, you can have them for about the price you would pay a contractor to install vinyl flooring.

Countertops vary in price depending on the materials used. The cost of counters is often related to their durability. You may want this if you want to be able to cut food directly on the counter. Choosing countertops that are less expensive can help you maintain the budget. Some expensive materials can be substituted with less expensive ones.

Once you have determined all that needs to be updated, figure out how much of the work can be done on your own. Contractors can eat up a large portion of your budget. The more you do on your own, the more you will save. You can always spend the extra money on new furniture.
