Choosing the Best Basketball Shoes to Improve Your Game

By Lee Stackhouse

Your basketball shoes are the only thing between you and the hard floor, and when you're running and leaping all over the court, your feet take quite a beating. That's why you should pay a lot of attention to the shoes that you wear when you play.

Many of you know that I'm a sports fanatic. You very likely already knew that if you read the write-up about how to be a better basketball player or some of the others! Lets hope this is one more one that is worthwhile.

Recently I put together a short article regarding basketball shooting tips which means this seemed like a fantastic followup.

Basketball is a game that involves a dizzying number of moves, so you need shoes that can take this treatment. You have to move swiftly in all directions, but then at times you have to instantly stop, which can be difficult. It can be necessary to change course, pivot and jump, all requiring perfect balance. That's why your shoes have to provide you with cushioning, while also being lightweight enough that you don't lose speed. Jumping, running and stopping abruptly can be difficult and even dangerous if you don't have the right kind of shoes.

You will find basketball shoes made from many different materials, and many of them are synthetic. Whereas in the past, most shoes were made from leather, today many use a combination of materials, such as mesh and synthetic, that are more durable and offer the best support and stability. The shoes that started it all were made from canvas, and you can still find those types of shoes these days. While you won't think of canvas as modern by any stretch of the meaning, they can offer a lot of comfort and durability. It's better to try on basketball shoes and decide which feel the best on your feet rather than buying them because they were made of a certain material.

When you shop for a basketball shoe, you can care about what it looks like, but that's not all you should look at. Athletic shoes are coveted by people who want to seem as though they're 'ballin', wearing the latest style that's endorsed by their favorite player, and these shoes are well advertised to make sure everyone knows about them. But if you are serious about basketball, you should make your decision based on how comfortable the shoe is, how much support it offers, and how much durability if offers first ahead of anything else. You may find that the hottest shoe doesn't feel good on your feet. You should never base your choice on peer pressure and advertising. Choose the ones that feel good and allow you to move around the court like lightning on fire.

Before you buy a pair of basketball shoes, it's best to try them on. This may seem obvious, but nowadays many people buy items over the internet based only on pictures. It's fine to buy your shoes online if you already have a brand and style in mind that you know from experience works well for you. However, when trying something new, you should really go to the mall or your favorite athletic shoe store and try them on. You could always do your first round of shopping at an athletic shoe store and then when you've narrowed down your search, go online and look for better prices on shoes you've already tried on. Even if you buy online, you're better off knowing what you're getting. When choosing the perfect basketball shoe, you should make your choice based on how you play and what your body style prefers, not on what someone else thinks. Just because your favorite pro player wears that shoe and shows up in commercials for it doesn't mean it's the one you should buy. Keep the above guidelines in mind when shopping for basketball shoes, and keep looking until you find the pair that feels like they were made for your feet.
