Government Grants: US Government Grants For Moms and Women

By Caleb Joseph

Government grants for small businesses are a great way to get the money to fund your start up!How many times have you had a great business idea, but no start up capital? If you're not already an entrepreneur, or related to one, you might not even know anyone with the money or contacts to money that could help you.You could try going to a bank, but if you don't have some sort of collateral, you're probably out of luck--especially in today's economic climate.

What's so great about government grants is there is money currently available for every possible type of business. More importantly, once you secure the money, you don't have to pay it back. So, it's not going to cut into your fledgling business' profitability. You can also get grants from private organizations!I suspect you've heard that you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get grants. Well,...that's actually true. But I've got news for you. As an experienced entrepreneur, if you can't get through the details of a grant application, then entrepreneurship might not be for you.

Well, they are not actually called 'mom grants', but yes, there are definitely more grant and scholarship opportunities available than in recent memory. The expanded PELL grant program would be the first program that you would want to explore, if you are having any financial challenges at all.

This is a federal assistance program designed for low-income students. The program was first established in 1965 and around 40 percent of all students in US colleges and universities receive some amount of PELL grant money. The Obama administration's initiatives are designed to increase the reach of this program over the next several years. PELL grant recipients must be 18 years of age and must make formal application for the program.

You can also look for grants given specifically to minorities if you belong to a recognized minority group in the United States. For instance, Community Services Block Grant is awarded to state-recognized low-income Indian tribes. As long as you certify your financial need and claim that you will be using the aid for educational, housing, employment purposes, or for your other immediate and direct needs, you will be eligible for this grant. If you are a migrant worker, or the child of a migrant worker, you can benefit from Government Grants grants such as Migrant Education-College Assistance Migrant Program.
