A Teaching Certificate: You Ticket To A Career In Education

By Franck Silvestre

Certification is an important step in any industry. Mechanics get certifications to work on cars, aviators get certified to pilot large aircraft, and teachers are often required to get certification before they can be employed to educate their students.

Since teachers take on the important role of educating our population, it it in everyone's best interest that they be officially certified in their field of expertise. Public schools often require a general teacher's certificate with a specific certification added on for any particular area that they may specialize in.

Depending on what state, and what country a teacher is working in, the certifications required may vary. For an individual looking to teach English overseas, it is highly recommended that they obtain an official ESL Certification.

Second - The CELTA is recognized world wide as a solid EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching credential, meaning that your English level is high and that you have proven knowledge of English language teaching techniques. It also indicates that you have in fact practice taught at satisfactory levels and that you understand learner needs and how to approach them, among other essential ELT basic skills.

Third - Almost all officially recognized CELTA programs have job placement services for their graduates, which means you can land your first job before you leave the USA. You'll have local contacts provided for you and the reputation of the school behind you as well. You may even be able to get leads on a second or even third position from your CELTA course provider as time ticks on if you need a change. This offers an excellent introduction to teaching while helping to minimize elements of the "culture shock" often experienced during your first overseas job.

A national teaching certificate, for example, can be granted for general elementary school teaching, or it could be granted for teaching math to middle school students. Many states place a premium hiring teachers with a national teaching certificate, in the form of higher salaries than they pay those teachers without them.

Every US state has specific requirements for teaching certificate qualification, but the majority of them demand both a that a teacher has both obtained a Bachelor's Degree in education from a state-accredited college or university, and passed a state licensing test.Various states also have different teaching certificates based on the age of the students and the subjects to be taught. Each state's Department of Education website will offer details on its requirements.
